context

Shared expenses are common after dining, shopping, or group activities. But when one person pays upfront, calculating each share, keeping track of repayments, and reminding friends is still largely a manual process.

The opportunity was to bring this entire experience into BIDV SmartBanking, starting from an existing transaction and continuing through splitting, tracking, and repayment.

Research

The payment itself was easy. What happened after the payment was not.

Context

People who regularly participate in shared activities such as dining, shopping, trips, or group events, where one person often pays upfront.

What we looked at

Competitive products

Techcombank

MoMo

Viettel Money

Through this research, I uncovered several recurring pain points:

Pain point 01

It was difficult to track who had paid, especially in large groups and when there were too many bank transfer messages.

Pain point 02

People felt awkward reminding others about money, so they often only followed up when it was really necessary.

Pain point 03

Expenses were tracked manually using Excel or notes, which was time-consuming and prone to errors.

Pain point 04

There was no tool to support splitting, tracking, and reminding payments in an automated and transparent way.

How might we help users split expenses fairly, track payment status, and send timely payment reminders in a transparent way without making the interaction feel awkward?

solution

From the main pain points, the solution was shaped into 3 feature groups throughout the split-money experience.

Split Money

Reduce manual calculation by allowing users to split directly from a transaction and support multiple splitting methods.

Payment Reminders

Allow users to remind only those who have not paid and personalize the message for each situation.

Payment Tracking

Help users know who has paid, who still owes money, and manage all amounts to collect and pay in one place.

ENTRY POINT

Split right after making a transfer

Immediately after completing a transfer, users can use the “Split Money” button shown on the result screen to quickly split the expense with the people related to that payment and avoid missing expenses that need to be split.

Split an expense from transaction history

The feature allows users to select previous transfers from transaction history to split later, which is especially useful when users forget to split at the time of transfer or want to review and split past expenses.

FLEXIBILITY

Custom amounts for uneven expenses

The system supports two splitting methods to match real needs (equal split or ratio-based split), while also allowing users to manually adjust each person’s amount by entering a specific value, helping optimize the experience and reduce errors when splitting.

Manage all “Money to Collect”

Users can view the list of expenses they have split, tagged by spending category (such as dining, entertainment, shopping). Each expense shows the amount already collected and the payment status of each participant.

In this feature, the person who split the expense can easily track:

  • Who has paid
  • Who has not paid
  • Mark payments as collected through other methods

This gives users better control, without needing to manually check whether each person has paid or not.

Not only collecting money, users also need to pay others

Users can check the amounts they need to repay to others, along with the payment status of each expense to see whether they themselves have paid or not.

Payment Reminders: Help users follow up without making repayment feel confrontational

Follow up on unpaid shares with more control

When someone has not completed their share of the payment, the person who split the expense can use the payment reminder feature to ask them to pay. In this feature, users can choose who to remind and send them a personal message.

The message will be delivered through a push notification.

User Testing

Testing exposed friction that polished UI alone wouldn't reveal

60%

Users struggled to discover the feature

The feature entry point and onboarding cue needed to be more visible.

80%

Ratio-based splitting wasn't self-explanatory

Most participants needed additional guidance to understand the ratio input.

"Đòi tiền" felt too confrontational

Testing also challenged the language used around repayment.

Reflection

01

Good UX sometimes starts before the feature itself

Connecting the flow to an existing transaction removed more friction than simply optimizing the split-money form.

02

Social context matters in financial products

A technically correct reminder can still feel uncomfortable. Language, timing, and recipient selection were part of the UX problem.

03

Testing changed decisions, not just visual details

Discoverability, terminology, and ratio-based splitting all required reconsideration after seeing how users actually interpreted the experience.

Prototype

This prototype brings the complete split-money experience together, from selecting a transaction and splitting the expense to tracking repayments and sending reminders.

You can click through the flow to see how the experience works and interact with the key screens.
